West Lake Hills has a colorful history. Situated west of the Colorado River and just six miles from downtown Austin, it became an incorporated village in 1953. How it started is the stuff of legends. According to local folklore, it all began as a revenge plot from its founder, Emmett Shelton. Shelton’s brother, Polk, failed to win the primaries for a seat in Congress in 1937. He lost to future President Lyndon B. Johnson. After the loss, Shelton and others who worked on his brother’s campaign created a vision of a city for people on the ‘right side of the issues.’ Shelton owned thousands of acres, starting the push to create what is now West Lake Hills.
The area got off to a rocky start. In the 1960s, it was home to just over 700 people. Those families raised enough money to buy the community a fire engine and safety equipment. From there, West Lake Hills grew quickly! West Lake Hills boomed in the 1970s and 1980s. Huge, sprawling estates popped up, and the area developed a reputation for its beauty. From the jump, residents prioritized maintaining the suburb’s natural beauty, a dedication that remains today. Modern West Lake Hills is home to almost 3,500 people.
